A Few Words about The Crowborough Scout Rock Festival 08

An estimated 400 music fans turned out at the Scout Rock concert. Held at Maurice and Julie McGowan’s Farm at Deerswood Farm in Ashdown Forest. It was a stunning backdrop across the Forest for this family event, everyone had a fantastic evening. In addition to the brilliant music there was face painting, a sweet stall, a BBQ, a bar and a free minibus shuttle service from Crowborough.

We have raised over £3500.00. All Funds raised at this event will go towards an ambitious trip for 30 Scouts and 10 leaders to China in July 2009. This is part of 1st Crowborough Scout Group’s 100 year centenary celebrations.

The Scout Bands consist of The Speed of Dark members Finn McGowan, Jed Long, Adam Kemp, Tom Kemp, Angus Waters and Calum Avery this is our youngest band who made there debut performance at The Summer Fair and would of made Ozzy Osborne proud with there rendition of Crazy Train.

Massive Moose were on next {formally known as Southon Rox} which mainly now consists of older Explorer Scouts and young leaders Darren Marshall, Charlie Jones, Max Waters, Steven Downing and Sam Coates apart from Charlie is the only member who is still a Scout. A very Slick performance with songs including Slither by Velvet Revolver. Although where not sure where some of the band are going with the Undertaker look. {sorry Boys}

Then The Allies members include Henry Boddy, James Creasy, Liam McGowan, Jack Mills, and Grant Taylor, who recently won a talent contest on local radio with there own song {get your kicks on the A26}.This band really is  coming on well. Great hopes for the future boys

The Event was headlined by Crashnburn a Classic Rock Covers band. Members include Ian McConnell guitar/ Vocal, Roy Marshall lead Guitar, Mike Edgerton Drums and myself Nick Jones Bass Guitar. There was a guest appearance from Gareth Heritage {Beacon school music teacher} during We Won’t Get Fooled Again. By the time we had got into our fourth song {Don’t believe a word} a full Moon was appearing over the horizon, smoke and light was emanating from the giant Dragons head on top of the Stage, the crowd was thronging, led by party reveller Amanda Burton who got up on Stage during Sweet Child of mine to bang the Tambourine. Finally after many encore’s we played Led Zeppelins Stairway to Heaven which bought on tears of emotion to many.

1st Prize in the Raffle was a Customised Guitar donated by Neil Long and won by Gillian Morris.

This is our second year at hosting this event. The first one, at Drumlin house organised by Phil and Pipa Shaw last year, was such a success we decided to make it an annual event.

Most of the music is Rock-pop orientated influenced by the band helpers myself, Martyn Everitt, Paul Wenham and Simon Marshall.

The event could not go ahead without generous support from local businesses such as TT Plant Hire, Longridge Print, Georgian Scaffold, Dave Fogal, Parker Building Supplies, Shaws  Kitchens. N.C. Jones Plumbing & Heating Services, City electrical Services, Chris Pugh Guitar customising, Gilberts car Hire, Mark Taylor from Plumbase and The Crashnburn rock band.

To sum up .It was another great success for 1st Crowborough. It was my pleasure to organize but could only happen with a lot of help from a hard working team. So a special thanks to all of the 1st Crowborough Leaders, parents and everyone I have forgotten. Here’s to the next 100years.

Nick Jones

This is really good news, yet again a fantastic achievement by the majority of the group.  I have already thanked Nick and he has said it was a team effort, however without the drive of someone in front, it doesn't get the support it needs so congratulations to Nick for taking it forward.  I'd also like to thank Mr and Mrs Kemp for the bar, Wendy for staffing the gate, Grant, Phil and Mike for the BBQ, Pippa for the sweets stall, Pam, Tracey and Helen for the raffle, Chris and Neil for the guitar and other prizes, Dave for the stage, Paul and Russell for the bands, Chris and Max for the projections, all the drivers of the minibuses, Martyn for being Martyn and everyone else who helped who I have missed.
Another good sum of money for the trip, and a really good get together for the group.
Thanks again
John Easton

I have got some photos with my brother and sister with the guitar they won on Saturday in the rock festival raffle, feel free to put them on the web with a message from all of us:  "thank you very much for the fun and the wonderful prize the Morris Family"   Chris Morris

Crowborough Scout Rock Bands

The first meeting of Crowborough Scouts Rock Band was on October 2004 when a few scouts jammed during the Jamboree On The Internet event. Since then Scouts have rehearsed almost every Tuesday evening at Crowborough HQ. The first Band was “Southon Rox” and is now known as “Massive Moose” whose members are Charlie Jones, Daz Marshall, Max Waters, Sam Coates and Steve Downing. They played at the Crowborough Gang Show in 2005 and have performed many gigs in the following years. They won the East Sussex County Battle Of The Bands in 2007.

In 2006 a second group of Scouts formed “The Allies”, Grant Taylor, Henry Boddy, Jack Mills, James Creasy and Liam McGowan. They have now performed large numbers of live performances at local venues. They have composed their own music coming 3rd in a local radio competition winning a recording studio session with the “A26”.

The bands have played at many Crowborough Town events, the County Scout Show, Martlets Jamboree, Bodwarts, Southborough, Chiddingly, Broadstone Warren, local pubs and of course the Crowborough Scout Rock Festival 2007.

The numbers of Scouts and Explorers practicing on Tuesday evening has continued to grow with “The Speed Of Dark” band starting in 2008, whose members are Adam Kemp, Angus Waters, Callum Avery, Finn McGowan, Jed Long and Tom Kemp and recently a fourth band has started with Adam Kennington, James Turner and Jamie Prowse.

We continue to go from strength to strength with this activity complementing the vast range of other scouting activities. The bands modern image presented to the young people of Crowborough makes them a brilliant emissary for the Scouting movement.

All this has been achieved with the unstinting tutorship, guidance and enthusiasm of Simon Marshall, Nick Jones and Paul Wenham every Tuesday, and now Thursdays as well.
