Sussex Downsman Competition 3rd October 2009. A test of endurance for Scouts, 25 miles over the South Downs way with the fastest team winning. There is also an ‘Open’ class ideal for cubs, and younger Scouts for training. Explorers walk 60 miles and Leaders 45 or 82 miles!

Uckfield and Ticehurst Scouts and Ashdown Explorers have a training programme almost every weekend. Training events planned by the Crowborough Group are on Sundays at 8am at Friends Clump on 16th Aug, 30th Aug, 6th Sep and 13th Sep. On 27th Sep the final training is on the South Downs and the event is on Saturday 3rd October.

NEW TROPHY

This year we are introducing a new trophy to Class B. This will be awarded to the fastest team to complete the Class where there are at least two female team members.

APPEAL

If you are able to offer assistance with the running of the event, please get in touch with the organisers. We particularly need people willing to man a checkpoint and owners of off road vehicles who could be called upon for search and rescue should this become necessary.

INFORMATION

Please note that as this event takes place on land entirely classified as Terrain Zero, a hill walking permit is not required.

The Hike is organised principally for the Scout and Guide Associations of East and West Sussex, with an open invitation to Scout and Guide Groups throughout Great Britain.

IT IS EXPECTED THAT TEAMS WILL HAVE HAD SUITABLE TRAINING AND PREPARATION FOR THE HIKE, AND THAT ALL MEMBERS ARE PHYSICALLY FIT.

CLASSES OFENTRY

The hike is divided into classes as follows. All team members must be members of the Scout Association or Girlguiding UK.

Class A - open to all ages - Male, Female or mixed

Class B - for under 18* years - Male, Female or mixed (EXPLORER SCOUTS).

Class C - open to all ages - Male, Female or mixed.

Class D - for under 18* years - Female only (EXPLORER SCOUTS).

Class S - for teams of 4 all under 15* years with a minimumcombined age of 48 - Male, Female or mixed (SCOUTS). Please note that only whole years are added together.

Class V - for teams of 3 with a minimum combined age of 100 - Male, Female or mixed. Please note that only whole years are added together.

Class W - open to all ages - Female only.

Downsman Open - No age restrictions - Male, Female or mixed. Under 14's to be accompanied by a responsible adult (over 18). This will be for fun and experience only. No trophies will be awarded for this event.

* Please note that maximum ages stated must be strictly adhered to, and apply on the day of the event.

Classes A, B, D and S consist of four persons to a team but only three are required to hike at any one time - the fourth member being transported by the Service Crew with the facility to change a team member at each of the Service Areas.

Classes C, V & W consist of three team members who hike the whole distance together.

Downsman Open can consist of between three and six team members who hike the whole distance together.

Route for each class

Class A hike from BURITON (Hampshire) to EASTBOURNE (East Sussex) approximately 80 miles.

Class B hike from BIGNOR HILL to EASTBOURNE approximately 60 miles.

Class C hike from BURITON, the winning team being the one that covers the furthest distance of the route in 15 hours. At the expiration of the 15 hours, teams cannot proceed beyond the next checkpoint orservice area.

Class D hike from the DEVIL'S DYKE to EASTBOURNE approximately 35 miles. Class Shike from BIGNOR HILL to DEVIL'S DYKE approximately 25 miles. Class V hike from BURITONto DEVILS DYKE approximately 45 miles.

Class W hike from BIGNOR HILL. The winning team being the one that covers the furthest distance in 10hours. At the expiration of the 10 hours, teams cannot proceed beyond the next checkpoint or service area.

Downsman Open hike from STEYNING BOWL to DITCHLING BEACON approximately 15 miles.

Start times on Saturday / maximum times

Start times will be allocated within the range stated below on a strictly first come first served basis of entries received. Please indicate on the entry form if you have a specificpreference, and allow time for us to notify you of your start time. Entries on the day will have to wait for the first available time slot.

Class A - Start 0800- 1000. 24 hours to complete.
Class B - start 0800 - 1200. 20 hours to complete.

Class C. - Start 0800 - 1000. 17 hours to complete.

Class D - Start 1 200 - 1400. 16 hours to complete.

Class S
- Start 0800- 1200. 16 hours to complete.

CLASS W - start 0800 - 1200. 12 hours to complete.

Downsman Open - start 1030 - 1 230. 10 hours to complete.

SERVICE CREW

Each team must have one vehicle with Service Crew, whose task it is to provide their team with necessary food and resting arrangements.

Please note that each team will be responsible for ensuring that their service crew has completed and submitted a Criminal Records Bureau form prior to the hike.

MISCELLANEOUS

Each and every infringement of the rules will incur a time penalty and possible exclusion
from the event. The penalty will be at the discretion of the organisers.

This year's entry fee is £5 per team member, and will include a medal for each team member of each team that completes the hike.

If you are unable to raise a complete team, but are keen to enter, please let us know and we will endeavour to put you in touch with others in the same situation.
